File Organiser

Desktop app · v4.0 · local · MIT

Scan this computer.
We’ll say what to delete.

File Organiser is an app you run on your machine — not a command you type. It maps the disk, then splits every heavy folder into Delete, Review, and Keep. Caches and old installers go on Delete. Photos, documents, and keys stay on Keep. Nothing leaves this computer.

Download the app See how it works

macOS, Windows, and Linux. Double-click. No Terminal.

What you see after a scan

Three columns. A reason on every row.

Safe to delete about 4.4 GB. Check 800 MB more before you touch it.

Delete

4.4 GB · 12 items

Caches, junk, old installers.

  • 1.4 GB node_modules — Regenerable cache.
  • 890 MB Chrome Cache — Apps recreate this.
  • 2.1 GB Install macOS.dmg — Old installer in Downloads.
  • 12 KB .DS_Store — Junk leftover.

Review

800 MB · 6 items

Large, stale, or duplicate. You decide.

  • 4.6 GB holiday.mov — Untouched for 2 years. Open it first.
  • 220 MB IMG_4032 copy — Duplicate. Keep one.
  • 80 MB project/dist — Looks like build output.

Keep

12 GB · leave it

Photos, documents, code, keys.

  • 8.1 GB Pictures — Your files live here.
  • 2.4 GB Documents — We do not auto-trash your work.
  • .ssh — Keys. Protected.

Get the app on your computer

This website never sees your files. Download the app, double-click it, press Scan this computer. That’s the whole setup.

GitHub → Releases → latest. If a release isn’t up yet, Actions → release-app builds one per OS. Developers can run python3 -m file_organiser with no extra words — that still opens the app, not a prompt for a subcommand.

How it works

  1. 01Scan this computer

Home, Downloads, Pictures, or any folder. Caches count. A sunburst shows where the bytes went.

  2. 02Read the advice

Delete is regenerable junk. Review is large or stale. Keep is your life — photos, documents, keys, git.

  3. 03Trash what you check

Only the Delete column can be sent to Trash in bulk. Review never auto-deletes. Keep is locked.

  4. 04Stay on this machine

The app is a local window. No account. No upload. Quit and it stops.

What it does that a pretty ring doesn’t

Tells you what to delete

node_modules, __pycache__, browser caches, .DS_Store, empty files, old .dmg/.exe in Downloads — with a sentence of why.

Tells you what to keep

Pictures, Documents, Movies, Mail, Photos libraries, .ssh. The app will refuse to trash a home folder or a drive root.

Then does the work

Trash checked items, reclaim duplicate extras, organize Downloads into categories, reveal in Finder. Undo lives in the folder.

House rules

  1. Nothing is uploaded. The scan never leaves localhost.
  2. The app will not organize or trash $HOME or / as a whole.
  3. Bulk trash only accepts items already classified as Delete.
  4. Keys, mail, photo libraries, and version control are Keep — always.
  5. You confirm every trash action. There is no “clean my Mac” that fires itself.

Category planner

A small, in-browser toy for names — not a disk scan. Useful if you want to see how a file would be filed. Your disk is never touched from this page.
